Consumers start 2015 by saving more

ByJames Brown

Having a decent deposit is the first step to securing property in Deception Bay, so latest consumer confidence figures might signal good news for the sector.

The ANZ-Roy Morgan Consumer Confidence index for the week ending 11 January was up just 0.3 per cent from the previous week, which could offer some insight into people's attitudes towards their money.

ANZ chief economist Warren Hogan explained that while the results may seem disappointing, they could indicate that Australians are more interested in saving than spending at the moment.

He suggest this is evident through "subdued levels of confidence, combined with soft retail sales in November and mixed anecdotes about December sales" that have emerged over recent days.
